Photopharmica has a large library of compounds that are highly active anti-infective agents. All these compounds have broad spectrum anti-microbial efficacy. Photopharmica are also working with the PDT world experts to develop novel indication-specific light sources.

New photosensitiser families have been discovered and protected which constitute a strong and robust pipeline as follows:
  1. Several novel phenothiazinium photosensitisers for use as topical therapeutic antimicrobial agents have been synthesised and characterised, and the most potent ones identified. These have been protected through patent applications.

  2. Other new phenothiazinium photosensitisers for systemic oncology use have also been developed and patented in parallel with the above. These new compounds combine high PDT activity with low skin photosensitivity and an Ames-negative response. Of particular interest is the fact that these compounds show widely differing drug-light interval profiles, which will give greater flexibility in designing optimum drug administration protocols. Structure-activity relationships have been investigated.

  3. Novel phthalocyanine photosensitisers, which combine excellent anti-tumour properties with minimal or zero skin photosensitisation have been developed and patented by Photopharmica. Porphyrin, chlorin and bacteriochlorin photosensitisers which have the same special structural characteristics as these are also patent protected, and examples have been synthesised and are undergoing testing.
