Market Information |
| Wound management-chronic ulcers and Skin ulcer |
The market for skin ulcer treatments is estimated to be approximately $3.5 billion in size in 2007. |
There are several types of skin ulcers that contribute to a need for wound care; diabetic skin ulcers, venous ulcers and pressure ulcers. A lack of effective treatment options adds to the increased costs for treating ulcers. There is still an overwhelming need for new and better products. |
| Surgical and trauma wounds |
The market for surgical and trauma wound treatments is estimated to be approximately $5.5 billion in size in 2007 |
Surgical and trauma wounds are, by far, the most common types of wounds addressed in the wound care arena. Growth in this market will likely come from new therapies that result in decreasing healing times, cost savings and improving patient care. PDT is expected to decrease the number of infections and therefore the patient bed time recovering from operations. |
| Parasitic Infection |
According to the World Health Organisation approximately 3.5 billion people suffer from parastitic infection. Anti-parasitics achieved revenues of $184.6 million in 2005. |
Parasitic infections are common in rural parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America and less prevalent in industrialized countries. Leishmaniasis is one such parasite which is becoming of interest due to infection in military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. Around 500 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in infection in US military between 2002 and 2004. |
| Acne |
The global market for acne and rosacea reached $1.6 billion in 2005 and is likely to grow to $1.8 billion in 2010. Predicted to represent a patient population of 147.2 million by 2011. The largest market segment is the retinoids at 60.4% market share. |
Acne is a skin condition caused by blockage and/or inflammation of sebaceous glands. It is the single most common skin condition affecting 85% of all adolescents. Traditional treatments include over-the-counter topical medications and prescription topical or oral antibiotics. Many OTC treatments are not effective and prescription antibiotics must be taken for a long time with the associated risks of resistance. PDT is being developed in this area due to the excellent healing associated with treatment. Success in the acne market is likely to lead to the broader use of PDT in the cosmeceutical markets. |
| Non melanoma skin cancer |
Globally nearly two million cases of non melanoma skin cancer diagnosed per year. The global market for skin cancer drugs increased to $24.6 million in 2005 (from $10.3 million in 2000). By 2010 this is likely to reach $56.1 million. Lack of proprietary pharmaceutical treatments in this area and the main treatment is surgery. |
About 1 in 4 of the Caucasian population of N America and Western Europe will develop non melanoma skin cancer, including superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and Actinic Keratoses (AK. These superficial precancerous skin lesions caused by chronic sun exposure are traditionally treated with cryotherapy, 5-fluorouracil cream and surgery. PDT has proved a successful alternative to these treatments).
DUSA Pharmaceuticals Inc have launched Levulan Kerastick (in 2000) for the treatment of actinic keratoses.
Photocure ASA utilizes Metvix for the treatment of BCC and AK.
The current skin cancer market is small primarily due to the lack of products available and it is anticipated that PDT will drive substantial growth in this area due to minimum down time for patients and excellent healing outcomes. There is a very limited competitive structure. |
| Nasal decolonisation |
If a treatment is accepted as a prophylactic then up to $3 billion per year. |
Colonisation of the anterior nares with MRSA has been shown to increase the risk of nosocomial infection. Also transmission of MRSA from the nose to others parts of the patient is now documented as a common cause of MRSA infection. |
| Orthopaedic |
The 2005 revenues for hip implants in the US were $2 billion and in Europe $1.4 billion. Knee implant revenues for 2005 were $2.4 billion in the US and $774 million in Europe. |
Hip and knee replacements are mature markets in the US and Europe. An estimated 815,000 hip replacement procedures were performed in the US and Europe in 2005 while the number of knee replacement procedures was estimated to be 761,000. |
| Periodontal |
In 2000, the total Oral Care market in the US was $56 billion, of which approximately $6 billion was periodontal disease treatment. |
The Oral Care market represents approximately 4.8% of the overall healthcare market in the US. Periodontal disease is the most prevalent disease in humans - more prevalent than Heart Disease. Degenerative periodontal disease affects 20+% of the population over age 50. |
