October 2008
Photopharmica is currently conducting a proof of principle clinical trial to evaluate the use of photodynamic therapy using PPA 904 for the eradication of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and its antibiotic resistant form MRSA. Around 30% of the population are carriers of SA/MRSA and the main reservoir is in the nose. Whilst carriers are normally perfectly healthy and do not develop infection, they can be a source of infection for vulnerable individuals in hospital or even for themselves if they require surgery. The current treatment for eradication takes at least 3 – 4 days and 10 – 15 treatments. Photopharmica’s trial is designed to see if PDT can achieve complete eradication in 1 – 2 treatments. Each treatment needs only the addition of a gel into the lower part of the nose, followed by shining a beam of light to activate the gel. The trial is ongoing but already there is evidence that PDT can reduce the levels of SA/MRSA in the nose by more than 90% in a single treatment.
